A Warren County man was recognized for saving a life.

The Illinois State Police District 14 and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Department presented David E. Avery with a Lifesaving Award on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

According to the Illinois State Police, on July 21, 2013, Avery and his wife crashed head-on with another car in Henderson County. In the collision, both vehicles caught on fire. Avery and his wife escaped their vehicle, but the driver in the other car was unable to get out.

Police said Avery approached the crash scene with the burning vehicles and pulled the other driver away from the fire.

Avery’s award notes that “the Illinois State Police applauds his heroism and appreciates his willingness to become involved even at great risk to himself.”
