The Galesburg Chamber of Commerce voted Monday in opposition of raising the Illinois minimum wage.
Executive Director Steven Brody says the vote represented the decision made by the majority of businesses that are board members.
"We sent out a survey in February of 2013 stating whether our members were in favor or opposition of raising minimum wage. Eighty-seven percent of our members were opposed to raising the minimum wage," said Brody.
That information is then forward to the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.
But some businesses in the area are in favor of raising the minimum wage. Susan Lyon is the owner of Uncle Billy's Bakery and says the minimum wage should be higher.
"It's the right thing to do," said Lyon.
But she's aware of the cost her business may encounter.
"We will probably have to raise our prices," Lyon said.
Governor Pat Quinn has stated he would like to increase the Illinois minimum wage from $8.25 an hour to $10.00 an hour. The current minimum wage is one dollar higher than the national minimum wage.
