New poll results show more than 80% of Iowa voters support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana for medical use.

Pollsters surveyed more than 1,400 registered voters in Iowa between March 5 and March 10, 2014.

Nearly 70% of all Iowans, regardless of gender, age or political affiliation, support allowing medical marijuana according to the poll results released Monday, March 17, 2014 from Quinnipiac University’s Polling Institute.

Iowa voters opposed allowing recreational marijuana by a margin of 55 to 41 percent, the poll found.  Recreational marijuana got more support from democrats (54 to 44 percent) and voters between 18 and 29 years old (62 to 35 percent).

“All other groups are opposed, with men opposed 51 – 45 percent and women opposed 59 – 37 percent,” the poll report said.

“Opposition to personal marijuana is higher in Iowa than in any state we’ve surveyed so far on this subject. Support for medical marijuana is comparable to other states,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the poll.

Iowa voters were equally divided about whether they thought marijuana leads to other drugs, 46 to 46 percent.  About half of Iowa voters said they think marijuana is equally as dangerous as alcohol.

“A total of 83 percent of voters would be somewhat uncomfortable or very uncomfortable riding in a car driven by someone who has smoked marijuana,” Brown said.

The poll results showed only 36 percent of Iowa voters said they ever tried marijuana.
