Davenport Dropout Rate Sits Above State Average

The Iowa Department of Education reports that the dropout rate for Davenport Community Schools was 4.9% in 2012-2013 for grades 9-12. You can see the numbers that board members released on Thursday, March 13th, 2014 by clicking here.

4.9% is a nearly four percent decrease in the dropout rate number from 2011-2012, which was 8.7%. In 2010-2011, the number was even higher, at 10.1 %.  The number for Davenport, 4.9%, is still above the state average, of 2.8% for 2012-2013.

School leaders in Davenport say they are still not where they want to be. However, they say that Thursday's announcement is very good news.

"The district has really come together to support these students and the work that all of the schools are doing with the counselors," Learning Support Specialist Pam Kirsch said. "Everybody that works hard to support these students is seeing some results."

The Iowa Department of Education says that Smart Intermediate School and Monroe Elementary School in Davenport, were recently listed as the “persistently lowest-achieving schools” in the state, according to the Iowa Department of Education. Wednesday, March 12th, News 8 found out how those schools are trying to reverse that trend.

Bettendorf Community School leaders say their dropout rate was just 1.5% for grades 9-12 in 2012-2013. Moline School leaders say their dropout rate was 2.5%. Rock Island leaders say there's was 3.8%.
