Without verifying the dog has current vaccinations, a 13-year-old will have to go through rabies prevention treatment after he was bitten by a German Shepherd.
A man and his two German Shepherds were near the playground area of Mark Twain Elementary School, 1620 Lincoln Road in Bettendorf at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014. One of the dogs was off its leash, and the loose dog bit a 13-year-old boy on the arm according to Bettendorf Police Captain Keith Kimball.
"The dog owner came over and grabbed the dog off the boy, and told him to wait at the school and he would be right back after securing the dogs," Kimball said.
The man left with the dogs and never returned.
The boy was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated and later released.
Kimball said a woman may have also been with the man and the dogs.
"The Bettendorf Police Department strongly urges the dog owner to please call so that the German Shepherd can be identified and verified that the dog is up to date on its rabies vaccination. Otherwise the 13-year-old boy will have to go through rabies shot treatment," Kimball said.
