Devin Hester, a kick returner for the Chicago Bears, will not be returning to the field in 2014.

ESPN Chicago reported that the Hester announced Wednesday, March 5, 2014 that his time playing with the Bears was over and the team was “parting ways” with him.

Hester took to his Facebook page to thank longtime fans and express his thoughts.

“I’ve always said I wanted to retire a Chicago Bear but sometimes things don’t work out the way we would like,” Hester wrote. “Chicago will always hold a special place in my heart and if I am fortunate enough to break the return record, we will have all broken it together… no matter where I am.”

According to the report, General Manager for the Bears, Phil Emery said on Thursday that for the past eight seasons, the team was “honored” to have Hester on board.

Hester is ranked as the NFL’s all-time leader in punt return touchdowns and total kick return touchdowns. Hester also reportedly ties Hall of Famer Deion Sanders with 19 regular-season return touchdowns.
