The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had denied the Illinois appeal for public assistance that would have gone to the Illinois communities hit by the November tornadoes.

Back in January, cities like Washington, IL found out that FEMA had denied their request for public assistance. After that, the state sent in an appeal to FEMA, asking them to review their decision. On Tuesday, March 4th, 2014, FEMA denied the appeal.

The help would have gone to nine counties hit by the tornadoes. Communities have to have a higher level of damage when the population of the state is large, like it is in Illinois. FEMA has helped out people and businesses through individual assistance, but the public assistance would have helped out individual communities.

In response, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has created a $45 million state relief package for the area. The governor will use $10 million in state funds to give to local governments, so they can re-build. Governor Quinn will be in Washington, Illinois Wednesday announcing his plan. He was scheduled to be there at 11:15 a.m.
