Two Quad City school districts received big news Monday, March 3, 2014.
Davenport and Bettendorf School Districts were two of 39 school districts selected by a 19-member Commission on Teacher Leadership and Compensation to be accepted into the teacher leadership system. There were 146 schools applicants in Iowa.
Davenport will receive nearly $5 million per year and Bettendorf will get more than $1.2 million.
The system allows teachers being able to work together more efficiently to educate their students. Educators say when more teachers are involved with a child's learning process, they are more likely to succeed.
"When teachers collaborate and work together and discuss what are the strategies and what works best and what worked for you and how did you do that they are able to meet the needs of the students," said Julie Staszewski, Director of Curriculum at Davenport School District.
Both Bettendorf and Davenport will have to fill several leadership positions before the system begins in August 2014. Both districts believe the new system will increase state test scores.
"The ultimate benefit will be higher degrees of learning and all students being successful," said Theron Schutte, Superintendent of Bettendorf Schools.
By the 2016-2017 school year, all Iowa schools will have the opportunity to join the teacher leadership system.
