Iowa streaming dash camera view from snow plows

Just in time for another snow storm, the Iowa Department of Transportation is streaming video from cameras mounted on the dashboard of some snowplows.

Just in time for another snow storm, the Iowa Department of Transportation is streaming video from cameras mounted on the dashboard of some snowplows.

Iowa DOT already offers a map to track the real-time locations of snowplows as they work during winter weather across the state.

Now, you can track where the snowplows are and get a real-time view of road conditions from extra points of view.  When you look at the map tracking snowplows in Iowa, the orange-circled arrow to indicate a snow plow in action.  That map now also shows blue dots to represent plows that also have dash-mounted cameras operating.

Click on the blue dot to see a still photo captured by the plow’s dash camera.

Up to 100 plows were equipped with the dash cameras.  Photos are refreshed after 30 minutes in an effort to offer travelers the most-current images available.

Iowa DOT still has stationary traffic cameras positioned at locations along many interstates and major thoroughfares in the Quad Cities and other areas in the state.
