Small businesses in the Quad City Area have watched winter slam them with obstacles this year. But those same businesses got a boost from their community on Saturday, February 22, 2014.
It's called Small Business Saturday and it's name says it all. It's a day that was created by American Express in 2010 to promote shopping at small businesses. And it's had a powerful impact for those like Joanne Gribbons.
"This day really helps us out especially after how tough this winter has been," said Gribbons, the owner of Showplace Antiques in downtown Sterling, Illinois.
Showplace Antiques has everything you can imagine. From books, toys, to furniture, there are four stories of antiques to choose from. And it's all locally owned by Joanne and her husband.
But Small Business Saturday doesn't just help small businesses, it helps the community.
According to research by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses, consumers spent nearly $5.7 billion on the last Small Business Saturday on November 30, 2013.
That leads to money staying in your local community which can help keep roads plowed of snow and potholes filled.
According to American Express, for every $100 spent at a mom and pop store, $68 of that stays local versus only $43 when spent at a big franchise.
And local shopper Lola Kahne is doing her part to shop small.
"I shop at small businesses because it keeps money in the community and places like Sterling can always use it," said Kahne.
And not only do small businesses create diversity, but it establishes a community. That's something you can't buy at a big franchise.
