A somber night, but a celebration of life as hundreds of people came together in Davenport to remember a police sergeant who died.  The turnout was symbolic of just how beloved Sergeant Kevin Marxen was.

A father, a friend and a mentor, all words friends, family and co-workers would use to describe Sergeant Kevin Marxen.

"I just cut his hair a couple weeks ago so I knew that he would be calling me soon," said Marxen's niece, Katlyn Vanscoy.

Sadly, family members got a different call. Marxen passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014. He was on a jog while off duty when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack.

"It was probably like one of the worse phone calls ever," said Vanscoy.

Friday, February 21, 2014, people gathered to light a candle, pray and took a walk over the bridge he used to run on.

"He would leave the station and go down to the Arsenal bridge around and then come back up the Centennial," said Vanscoy.

Step by step all taking the walk to honor him. His fellow officers not far behind. Hundreds of feet for one guy who made a lasting impression on so many.

"He's the kind of guy that you met him one time and you'll never forget," said Vanscoy.

His family is organizing a race in his name. Funeral services are set for Monday, February 24. The Betterndorf police and Scott County deputies will work the first shift for the Davenport Police Department so they can all attend together.
