Untreated wastewater was flowing into a ditch that leads to the Mississippi River in Louisa County.
The Iowa DNR said that around noon Thursday, February 20, 2014, lightning knocked out pumps at a wastewater pumping station causing untreated water to flow out.
Officials estimated that 700 gallons of wastewater had discharged by 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Crews were working on repairs, but the leakage continued. They were able to reduce the flow with a secondary pump.
It was expected that the pumping station would be back in order Friday.
