Augie freshman looks to national title

An Augustana freshman is picking up where his father left off, and hopes to continue rolling in the success.

An Augustana freshman is picking up where his father left off, and hopes to continue heading toward success.

Sean McMahon has been picking up the pace and winning more matches on the wrestling mat. He said his inspiration is his father, Pat McMahon, who wrestled for Augie and was a national champion in 1984.

“My goal is to follow in his footsteps and try to be a national champion here,” Sean said. “He’s just been pushing me my whole life.”

While Sean says his father motivates him, he didn’t force wrestling upon him. He said he used to think baseball was in his future, but decided in high school he wanted to be a wrestler.

Sean said his future goals are to continue working his way up and hopefully make it to a national tournament.

According to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, Augustana won its first CCIW wrestling title since 2004 on Thursday, February 20, 2014.
