Flood Watch Causes Concern for Drivers

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the area starting at 3 a.m. Thursday, February 20. The watch was expected to last through Thursday afternoon.

The Quad City area is under a flood watch.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the area beginning at 3 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014. The watch was in effect through Thursday afternoon.

More than one inch of rainfall was forecast Thursday, with heavier amounts falling south and east of the Q.C. Because the ground is frozen, rain may start collecting which could create urban and small stream flooding.

There was a bit of flooding on River Drive just to the east of the downtown Davenport area Thursday morning. Drivers could see standing water on River Drive near Oneida Avenue. It did not cause any problems though.

“The combination of melting snow, frozen ground, and rainfall of a half-inch to around an inch late tonight and Thursday morning will result in an elevated risk of flooding,” said a spokesperson from the NWS.

StormTrack 8 Meteorologist Terry Swails advised that some of the storms may produce small hail south of I-80 early on Thursday morning.
