A water main break near the water treatment plant has affected the appearance of water for many people in Galesburg, Illinois.

A statement from city officials said the water main break happened early Monday morning, February 17, 2014.

The break caused water to reverse direction in several water mains throughout the city of Galesburg, “resulting in rusty water for many customers,” the statement said.

“The water is safe for consumption, but customers are encouraged to let their water run for several minutes until it clears up and not to do laundry until they have clear water,” the statement said.

Water main breaks recently affected the water supplies in many area communities.  Rock Island citizens had a boil order lifted there after multiple water main breaks caused concern there February 13 and 14.  Burlington and West Burlington residents were advised to boil and cool water used for drinking and cooking after water main breaks prompted a precautionary boil advisory there.

Wilton, Iowa was also placed under a precautionary boil order as of Saturday, February 15 after water main breaks there.
