A bill to increase prison time for people convicted of kidnapping children is up for debate in the Iowa House.

WHO reported that the bill, which has been encouraged by the parents of Kathlynn Shepard, was approved by the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, February 13, 2014.

Previous reports indicate that in May of 2013, 15-year-old Kathlynn and a 12-year-old girl were kidnapped after getting off the school bus. Kathlynn was later found dead. The 12-year-old was able to escape from the captor.

According to the Des Moines Register, the legislation would require a 25-year prison sentence for any kidnapping of someone 16-years or younger.
