Residents of the Village of Erie, Illinois are being asked to keep a steady stream of water running from at least one faucet in their home to help prevent city water lines from freezing.

Erie Public Works Superintendent Doug Farran issued the request Monday, February 10, 2014.

Farran says residents should leave one faucet running continuously, with a stream “just past a drip so it’s a small steady stream” of water.  Farran says the action is necessary to help keep water moving, and prevent it from freezing, in the city’s water system.

Farran said he could not be certain how long the measure would be necessary, but that it “could be a month” before the request is lifted.

Because Erie bills for actual water usage and not by a flat rate, Farran said he will ask the village board to consider adjustments to water bills.  The board was scheduled to meet Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
