A Dubuque woman will spend more than seven years in federal prison for trying to use Craigslist to hire someone to kill her father.

Megan Schmidt, 23, was charged in June, 2013 after she posted an ad on Craigslist offering to pay $10,000 for a “one time job.  Prosecutors said Schmidt didn’t realize she was dealing with an undercover Dubuque County Sheriff’s deputy when she confirmed she would pay $10,000 to have her father killed.

The deputy later met Schmidt in Dubuque, and that’s when she was arrested.

Schmidt pleaded guilty in November to one count of using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire.

Schmidt was sentenced Wednesday, February 5, 2014 to 87 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.
