A broken fire hydrant made an East Moline fire battle extra challenging.

Around 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2014 an apartment building at the corner of 15th Avenue and 9th Street became engulfed in flames.

A hydrant the firefighters were using broke, and they had to use a water cannon to douse the flames instead.

There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross responded in case any affected families needed assistance.
