Iowa teen says he stole SUV to save his own life

Police say a Des Moines teen told them he stole an SUV to escape from another teen who robbed and shot him.

Police say a Des Moines teen told them he stole and wrecked an SUV to get away from another teen who robbed and shot him.

The 18-year-old victim reportedly told Des Moines Police he thought he was going to a party when he accepted a ride with a 16-year-old acquaintance Saturday night, February 1, 2014.

When they arrived at the supposed party location at about 11:30 p.m., the 16-year-old allegedly walked to the passenger side of the car, pointed a gun at the victim and ordered him to empty his pockets according to the Des Moines Register.

Then the alleged robber told the victim to run.  He only made it a few steps when he was shot in the leg.

The victim said he kept going on foot until he saw a running SUV parked along the side of the street.  He got into the SUV and drove himself to the hospital.

A witness told police the stolen SUV hit a vehicle parked in front of the hospital and then crashed into the hospital building.  The victim got out of the SUV and collapsed on the ground.

No arrests were made yet in the case.
