Local farmers have roundtable discussion about Farm Bill

After the Agriculture Act of 2014 passed through the House, a group gathered with Congresswoman Cheri Bustos in a roundtable discussion.

On Saturday, February 1 Illinois residents joined Bustos at the Rock Island County Farm Bureau to discuss the recently passed Farm Bill.

They group talked about the zero cuts to programs that help feed the hungry in local communities and the crop insurance program.

“In the scheme of things it's fairly historic because Congress hadn't managed to pass a five-year farm bill since 2008," said Bustos. “The last version had expired so the fact that we could come together in a bi-partisan fashion to pass this, the Senate will vote on it next week, the President then will sign what we vote to pass and we give some predictability to the family farmers."

Bustos estimated that there are 200,000 farmers and people who support the agriculture industry in the area.
