A state senator has introduced a bill that would make so-called ‘revenge porn’ a felony in Illinois.
The action involves sharing or posting intimate photos of someone else online, often identifying the person in the photos. Websites that host those photos request a fee to have them taken down.
It’s called ‘revenge porn’ because the images are often posted by the victim’s former lover.
Senate Bill 2694 would make it illegal not only to post such images, but the law also makes it illegal to host the photos online or solicit payment in exchange for taking them down.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Michael Hastings on Wednesday, January 28, 2014.
