The Better Business Bureau is warning credit card users to watch for small amounts mysteriously charged to their cards.
It’s all part of a scam.
“With this new con, scammers are banking on the fact that many consumers don’t check their credit card statements all that carefully,” said a post on the BBB website. “Don’t fall for it.”
The BBB cautions you to review your recent statements carefully, and watch for unexplained charges of $9.84. The charges are usually from a website, and when you check the web address on the bill it goes to a generic landing page that claims to offer customer support. When contacted, operators for the “customer support” sites offer assurance that the charge will be removed, but that doesn’t happen.
Recent victims were all charged $9.84 but scammers might change that amount as they discover word is out about the scam.
What they’re doing is testing your card to see if it works.
“(I)t’s likely scammers will be back for more,” the BBB post said.
The BBB also says the scammers figure many cardholders won’t notice the relatively small charge, and the credit card companies won’t go after such a small amount. When many victims are hit, though, the totals for the scam can quickly add up.
If you see a charge on your credit card and don’t know what it is for, you should call the number on the back of your card to contest the charge.
