Moline city leaders are hoping grant money comes through to build a safe route to school for some students.

The city will ask the Illinois Department of Transportation for $160,000 to help build a five block trail along 25th avenue.

The path would give students a way to walk to Hamilton Elementary School, once Garfield is closed.

Alderman-At Large Stephanie Acri said the sidewalk has benefits for the whole community.

"Anyone that's traveled Morgan Park, it's a beautiful area to be in, and pedestrians have some interest in using that for walking their dogs and just walking for exercise," Acri said.

If awarded the full grant, the city would need to match $40,000 for construction.
