This method is great if all you want to do is multiply numbers. But when these students get to Algebra, they have no concept of how to multiply polynomials. I spend a lot of time re-teaching multiplication skills…

I agree! This can be used as a strategy for struggling students, but not as the main way to learn multiplication. Our kids should have their basic facts memorized!

There is a good 15 minute video on New math at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr1qee-bTZI

The type of problem you are showing on your news page is at 5:00 but please listen to the whole 15 minutes it is very informative!

That was a really great and informative video, thanks!

I’m almost 27 and I wish I had learned this when I was younger! Love how easy it is!

Huh?

Knowing basic addition and multiplication is key. Since standardized tests are timed, you may want to learn and use the most efficient strategy.

14*56 is 784…. so I’m not seeing how they end up with the FINAL answer above? I see how they lattice out the problem…ok yeah fine…but how do the kids end up with the FINAL answer? I’m not seeing that someone care to explain? Thanks
