Iowa lawmakers return home on Friday, January 24th, 2014 to discuss the state's biggest issues. One of them involves the state gas tax.

Lawmakers brought up increasing the tax last year too. An ethanol surcharge on gasoline could give the state an extra $40 million for road improvements. Gas prices would rise 10 cents a gallon in Iowa, if it was approved.

Lawmakers say it will be tough to raise the tax though. State House Rep. Cindy Winckler says she's undecided on the issue. She does say there needs to be something done with the state's roads and bridges.

"We need to support the infrastructure," Winckler said to News 8's John David on January 3rd. "There's no getting around it. We don't want to wait until a tragedy occurs on our roads or our bridges."

Winckler will be at meetings Friday discussing the state's biggest issues. The first meeting starts at 11 a.m. with the Scott County Board. The second starts at 11:45 a.m. Both are being held at the Clarion Hotel in Davenport.
