Employees of a Sears store in Dubuque, Iowa were notified on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 that their location will be closing.

According to a report by the KCRG, Sears in Dubuque’s Kennedy Mall will be closing in late April.

Director of Corporate Communications for Sears Holdings, Howard Riefs said the Dubuque store was closing because the lease was not renewed.

“Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” Riefs said.

Riefs said the store will start its liquidation sale in February. The store’s 50 employees will be eligible for severance and will have the option of applying for open positions at other Kmart or Sears stores. Riefs said the majority of the Dubuque store’s workers were part-time, hourly associates.

According to the report, in January 2013, Sears Holdings closed a store in Coralville. Another Sears store in Moline was closed in October of 2013.

According to Sears stores website, stores are still open in area locations Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Iowa City, Moline, and Waterloo.
