Nonprofit organization rewrites past experiences

A nonprofit in Chicago doesn’t do your typical charity work. This organization does tattoos.

A nonprofit in Chicago doesn’t do your typical charity work. This organization does tattoos.

According to the organization’s website, the artist at Sacred Transformations, Eric Dean Spruth, aims to transform unwanted scars, burns, or tattoos into artwork to be proud of.

Spruth graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an undergraduate degree in fine art and a minor in psychology and philosophy. Spruth also holds a Master of Art Therapy. He said each tattoo he designs is custom to what the client wants.

“I design custom works with each person, discussing what the tattoo will mean to them,” said Spruth. He describes the process as a transformative spiritual experience and an opportunity to commit to something important in the client’s life.

Many volunteers with different skills also work at the shop. People volunteer as artists, clinical professionals, video production students, client liaisons and more.
