(CNN) — There are no more water utility customers in West Virginia being told not to drink their tap water, officials said Saturday
However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is continuing to urge pregnant women to avoid drinking the water for now as a precaution, West Virginia American Water spokeswoman Laura Jordan said.
About 300,000 people had been advised to not drink or bathe with the water after the chemical, 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, was detected in water supplies January 9.
Authorities said about 7,000 gallons of the chemical used to clean coal leaked out of a storage tank at a business and seeped into the Elk River near an intake for a West Virginia American Water treatment plant.
Water testing started last weekend and residents were given the go-ahead on a zone-by-zone basis. On Saturday, West Virginia American Water lifted the “do not drink” advisory for all customers.
Jordan said the CDC advised: “At this time, scientists continue to recommend 1 ppm as a protective level to prevent adverse health effects. However, due to limited availability of data, and out of an abundance of caution, you may wish to consider an alternative drinking water source for pregnant women until the chemical is at non-detectable levels in the water distribution system.”
