Local events honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on Monday, January 20, 2014. Many local events have been organized to commemorate Dr. King.

Clinton: Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will be held Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Ashford University in the Durgin Center at 2:30 p.m.  Radio talk show host and political activist Joe Madison will be the keynote speaker at the 26th annual celebration. It is free and open to the public.

The 12th Annual MLK Peace and Justice Award will be presented at the event. Canned good donations will be accepted in honor of the MLK Day of Service and given to local pantries. Refreshments will be served after the program concludes.

Davenport: United Neighbors Annual Dr. King Celebration starts at 10 a.m. Monday, January 20 and will be held at United Neighbors at 808 N. Harrison Street. The event is free and lunch will be provided. For more information call 563-322-7363.

Davenport: Kids Against Hunger MLK Day Event will be held at the Roosevelt Community Center, 1220 Minnie Ave. at 1 p.m. Congressman Dave Loebsack will be speaking at the event and help package meals for the Kids Against Hunger Program.

Davenport: MLK Day Community Service Project is a volunteer project from 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 20 at W. 6th Street. Volunteers will help assemble donations for the Red Cross, elderly seniors, and students. Registration is required — click here.

Davenport: March to Remember – Silent March will be held Tuesday, January 21 starting at Christ the King Chapel at 3:05 p.m. The march will commemorate the Civil Rights Movement beginning with a presentation by historian Charles Pearson followed by a march across campus. Hot chocolate will be served afterward in the Ambrose Hall Bee Hive Lounge. The event is free and open to the public.

Iowa City: Annual MLK Interfaith Worship Service will be held at St. Marks United Methodist Church on E. Washington at 7 p.m., Sunday, January 19. The Consultation of Religious Communities of Johnson County is sponsoring the event and all are welcome.

Iowa City: The MLK Unity March will start at 3:30 p.m., Monday, January 20 at the east steps of Old Capitol Museum. Event is open to the public.

Iowa City: Time to Remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. starts at 4 p.m., Monday, January 20 at the Senate Chambers of Old Capitol Museum. Event is open to the public.

Iowa City: Martin Luther King Community Celebration will be held Monday, January 20 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at 411 South Governor. The event is free and will feature several speakers, gospel music, and will have audience interaction. Questions may be directed to Billie Townsend at billie-townsend@uiowa.edu.

Ottumwa: Martin Luther King Citywide Celebration will be held at Indian Hills Community College in the St. John Auditorium. The free event will go from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Monday, January 20. Congressman Dave Loebsack will speak at the event honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rock Island: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration will be held Saturday, January 18 at 6 p.m. at Augustana  in Centennial Hall. The free event will feature a musical tribute to honor Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. Presentations by various singing groups, dancers, and speakers will be showcased.

Rock Island: Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Service and Award Ceremony will be held Monday, January 20 from 10:30 a.m. – noon at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on 9th Street.  The event’s theme is Unarmed Truth and Unconditional Love. The event will honor the life of Dr. King with a variety of performances and presentations.
