Track snowplows in Iowa any time

If you’ve ever wondered where the snowplows are, the Iowa Department of Transportation can now tell you.

If you’ve ever wondered where the snowplows are, the Iowa Department of Transportation can now tell you.

The Iowa DOT now has a snowplow locations map available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which offers real-time information on where snow plows are working and even which direction they’re traveling.

“Data is fed automatically to the map from each Iowa DOT snowplow every two minutes,” according to Bob Younie of the Iowa DOT.

Site visitors who visit the map can also click on the icon for any individual snowplow to get detailed information about that plow’s location and the weather conditions at that plow’s location.

“The driving factor behind technology we implement is to help our customers stay safe,” said Eric Abrams, who leads the team responsible for the snow plow information.  “This is just one more piece of information that travelers can use to see what is happening on the roadways and make more informed decisions regarding their travel plans.”
