Iowa City Police say a man they pulled over tried to get rid of marijuana he had by eating it.

Criminal complaints filed against 19-year-old Quentrel Johnson said police pulled him over in Iowa City near I-80 at 5:05 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2014 for not using headlights on the SUV he was driving.  Police alleged a strong odor of marijuana was apparent in Johnson’s vehicle.

“When contact was made a second time, the (defendant) appeared to be chewing on something,” the complaint said.  Police allege they found chewed up marijuana in Johnson’s mouth on his tongue and in his teeth, and that they also found a “zip lock bag with a sizable amount of marijuana” and $3,145 in cash on Johnson.

Police also reported finding a bottle containing liquid codeine in Johnson’s vehicle, and they claimed Johnson “admitted the drink in the center console was a mix of lemonade, Sprite and codeine.”

The complaints also said Johnson “performed poorly on all stages” of field sobriety tests and that a Drug Recognition Expert determined Johnson to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Johnson was charged with OWI, possession of marijuana, obstructing justice and illegal possession of a prescription drug.  Court records show Johnson was released January 13, 2014 in lieu of $1,000 bond.
