Wrecks restrict Centennial Bridge traffic

Iowa-bound traffic was restricted to one open lane for much of the morning as crews spent hours clearing repeated crashes on the Centennial Bridge.

Icy road conditions were believed to have contributed to widespread traffic problems, including those on the bridge, throughout the morning Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

Police from Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois worked crashes reported before dawn on the bridge that connects the two cities.  Motorists were urged to avoid the Centennial Bridge if possible, and to plan to use extreme caution if they chose to use that bridge because slick conditions were likely to persist on area roadways.

Crews continued to clear wrecks and treat the pavement on the bridge until they were able to reopen all lanes, around 10:45 a.m.

Davenport Police Captain Paul Sikorski said no serious injuries were reported during any of the Tuesday morning crashes.

Capt. Sikorski said Davenport Police worked eight crashes on the Centennial Bridge Tuesday morning, and that seven of those wrecks happened between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m.
