Joshua Hayes, 20; Shane Smeltzer, 19 and Sean Russell, 21 were each expected to be sentenced January 16, 2014 for separate and previous convictions for burglaries to businesses and homes in Davenport.
Investigators now say the three men are suspected of committing about 30 commercial burglaries in which they went to and from crime scenes through pike paths, creek beds, woods and fields on ATVs to avoid being detected.
Police say undercover detectives shadowed the three men as they allegedly tried to break into the Dugout Tap at 3504 Hickory Grove Road and as they allegedly broke into the Humane Society office at 2802 West Central Park and Sanchos at 307 East George Washington Blvd.
Police said they busted the three men in a business on East George Washington Boulevard. The three men were booked into the Scott County Jail between 7 and 8 a.m. Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
Jail records show Hayes, Smeltzer and Russell are each charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, one count of attempted third-degree burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools. They were held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of $14,000 bond each.
In the previous cases, Sean Russell was arrested in September 2013 and charged with two counts of second-degree burglary plus one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized use of a credit card. Police say those charges related to Russell's involvement in a series of residential burglaries in east Davenport. Court records show he pleaded guilty to the charges in early December, and was scheduled to be sentenced January 16, 2014. He was not in jail while awaiting sentencing.
Court records Hayes and Smeltzer were also scheduled to be sentenced January 16, 2014 after they each previously pleaded guilty to felony charges of criminal mischief, theft and burglary in connection with several business burglaries that happened in November 2012 and January 2013.
