Windy, Icy Weather Delays Fire Crews in Port Byron

Firefighters battled harsh weather conditions at the scene of a fire in Port Byron, Illinois.

UPDATE as of 5:47pm -- The Fire Chief of the Port Byron Fire Department confirms that no one was at the house at the time of the fire, but they say they believe a dog may have been inside.

He also tells News 8 that fire crews had a difficult time getting to the house because high winds pushed down the smoke and a drop in temperatures caused some icy conditions on a steep hill leading to the house.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

UPDATE as of 3:22pm -- A deputy with the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department tells News 8 that no one was home at the time of the fire.

EARLIER STORY -- Firefighters are on the scene of a fire in Port Byron, Illinois at this hour.

Emergency crews received reports of a structure fully engulfed in flames around 2:00pm on Sunday, December 29th, 2013. The structure is located at 461 Ravine Street, Port Byron.

Initial reports say the building was a two-story house and it's burnt to the ground.
