Four people were arrested in connection with a fraudulent credit card scheme.
According to the East Moline Police Department, on Tuesday, December 24, 2013 around 4:30 p.m. a group of people were at Walgreens attempting to use fraudulent credit cards to buy Visa gift cards. Officers stopped the group as they attempted to drive away from the store.
Police arrested 26-year-old Jerame Moore, 26-year-old Felicia Jackson, 22-year-old Mercedes Brown, all from the Chicago-area, and 33-year-old Shaun Smith from Atlanta, Georgia, on suspicion of credit card fraud.
“Police found over 65 fraudulent credit cards in their possession,” said a spokesperson from the East Moline Police Department. Each was charged with possession of counterfeit credit card and theft.
Officials said the investigation began on December 16 when Walgreens loss prevention alerted area stores and law enforcement that a group of people had been using fraudulent credit cards to buy Visa gift cards at area Walgreens stores.
“Further investigation revealed that the scheme involved numerous stolen credit card numbers that had been encoded on the fraudulently manufactured Rush Card Live and Green Dot credit cards,” officials said.
These cards were allegedly used to purchase Visa gift cards and then sold on the streets in Chicago.
Police said they were each being held on $75,000 bond at the Rock Island County Jail.
