Dozens of exotic birds are up for adoption after being removed from a Des Moines home.

Through Thursday, December 26, 2013 the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is accepting adoption applications for about 50 birds in their care. The animals were rescued from a Des Moines home in early December 2013.

Previous reports indicate that the Des Moines homeowner died after he exchanged gunfire with police. Sixty living and two deceased animals were reportedly rescued from the home.

The ARL is charging $20 per application. Interested parties have until 7 p.m. Thursday to submit their applications. Chosen adopters will be contacted Monday by 7 p.m. via phone. Special adoption requirements and additional information can be found on the ARL’s website.
