The Playtex Hip Hammock baby carrier has been recalled after 87 reports of buckles cracking or breaking, sometimes resulting in injuries to babies.
The Playtex Hip Hammock is designed to hold babies between 15 and 35 pounds. The carrier holds the baby against the caregiver’s body at the hip with straps that wrap around the adult’s hip and shoulder.
A recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission says the buckles on those straps can crack or break.
“Playtex has received 87 reports of the buckles cracking or breaking, including two reports of injuries, where one infant required emergency room treatment,” the notice said.
The recalled baby carriers were sold at baby, children and discount stores nationwide and online from Amazon.com between June 2004 and December 2008 and again in January 2010 in Canada. The basic model cost about $40 and the deluxe model sold for about $60.
Consumers should stop using the carrier and contact Playtex for instructions on returning the item for a full refund.
