After scaling back his campaign, Rep. Tyler Olson has now dropped out of the race to become the next governor of Iowa.

Olson, the former head of the Iowa Democratic Party, announced his candidacy in July 2013.

In early December, Olson announced he would temporarily scale back his campaign because he and his wife were working through divorce proceedings.   At that time, Olson said he planned to resume his gubernatorial campaign after the holidays.

The week before Christmas, Olson posted notice on his campaign website confirming he is withdrawing from the race.

“While focused on supporting my children through the transition in my personal life it is clear they need my full attention. It is time to end my campaign for Governor,” the post read.

Olson thanked everyone who offered encouragement and support, as well as supporters who joined his campaign.

“I hope you still believe as I do that Iowa’s brightest days are ahead,” Olson’s post read.

His departure makes Senator Jack Hatch the only Democrat who has declared his candidacy for the Iowa gubernatorial race.

Olson currently represents Cedar Rapids in the Iowa legislature.
