Police say distracted driver caused rollover crash
Illinois State Police say a distracted driver caused a crash in which a semi overturned on Interstate 80.
The wreck happened just after noon Monday, December 16, 2013 on westbound I-80 at mile marker 31, about two miles west of Annawan.
A spokesman for Illinois State Police said the driver, 61-year-old Esteban Morales of Columbus, Ohio, was driving in the right lane when he reached for his dropped eyeglasses. Police said that distraction caused Morales to cross the truck onto the right shoulder where it struck the guardrail and rolled onto the passenger side.
Morales was wearing a seat belt “that very well may have saved him from serious injury,” according to a spokesman for Illinois State Police.
The trailer was carrying a load of vehicle windshields.
The right-hand westbound lane remained blocked nearly two hours after the wreck happened. It was unclear how long crews would remain on the scene of the wreck.
Police said Morales was cited for improper lane use.
