Accumulating snow is expected for most communities in our area, and some counties are under a winter weather advisory.
A winter weather advisory means periods of snow could cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for slick, snow-covered roads and limited visibilities.
The National Weather Service says three to six inches of snow could fall from a storm that moves through our area from Friday into Saturday morning. Snowfall accumulations were forecast to be heavier in locations south of the immediate Quad Cities, leading to a winter weather advisory.
The advisory was in effect from 3 p.m. Friday, December 13 to 6 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013 for locations forecast to receive three to five inches of snow from the storm. The advisory area included Henry (Iowa), Des Moines, Van Buren, Lee, Bureau, Putnam, Henderson, Warren, Hancock, McDonough, Scotland, Clark, LaSalle, Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton and Tazewell counties.
“The heaviest snow accumulations are expected to be generally along and south of a line from Memphis, Missouri to Peru, Illinois,” said the advisory on the NWS website.
Visibilities could be as low as a half-mile in moderate snowfall periods, and winds were expected to blow out of the east at 5 to 10 miles per hour. Roads could become snow-covered and hazardous late Friday afternoon and into the overnight hours.
Most counties in the WQAD News 8 viewing area were forecast to get some snow from the storm. Lesser accumulations were expected north of a line from about Fairfield, Iowa to Princeton, Illinois.
