The Salvation Army is seeing a shortage in donations this holiday season.
Organizers from the Salvation Army said during the 2013 season they have seen a shortage of monetary donations to their Red Kettle Drive and toys to their toy drive.
Major Gary Felton said since Thanksgiving came later than usual people had less time to give before Christmas. On December 17 volunteers will help to distribute toys to 3,000 children around the Quad Cities.
“We’re hoping that we can get more volunteers out there ringing bells and hopefully people will dig deeper in their pockets knowing that we have a real need in our community and we do that,” Felton said. “In the end when everything is said and done, we’ll make our goal.”
The shortage isn’t just local, it’s a national trend. According to the Salvation Army website, as of the afternoon on Friday, December 13, 2013 the organization had only reached 35 percent of their goal. They aimed to reach $3 million during the season, and were over $1 million Friday.

According to the River Cities’ Reader a Fill the Truck event will be held at all four Quad City area Wal-Mart stores on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14 from noon to 6 p.m.
