The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s traffic cameras captured the frightening massive pileup that happened on Highway 41/45 near Lannon Rd. around noon on Sunday, December 8th.

It was one of several crashes along that highway during a snowstorm that day.  More than 100 vehicles were reported wrecked in incidents along Highway 41/45 during the weekend storm.

Some drivers said they headed for the ditch just to avoid other vehicles that appeared to be sliding out of control on the slick road.

A pileup involving about 60 cars closed part of the highway for hours.

Officials say the video clearly shows people were driving too fast for the conditions on the roadways according to WITI-TV. They say it also illustrates something you’re never supposed to do — step outside of your vehicle along the roadside — especially when the conditions are as they were on Sunday.

Authorities in the Quad Cities area said there were still vehicles stranded along local roads 24 hours after snow fell there.
