Shotgun deer season is opening in Iowa on Saturday, December 7, 2013, according to the Iowa DNR.

Bow hunting season lasts through January 10, but DNR wildlife research supervisor Willie Suchy said odds are better for hunters to bag a deer during shotgun season, according to a report by Radio Iowa.

While hunters are more likely to take home a deer with a shotgun, Suchy said bow hunting has some advantages including the season length and the extra skills bow hunters get to use. “I think it’s a challenge for some people,” Suchy said.

The first shotgun season runs through December 11, and the second is from December 14 – 22.
