Iowa brothers drown after fall through ice on pond

Two Iowa boys died when they drowned after falling through ice on a pond on their family’s home.

Two Iowa boys died when they drowned after falling through ice on a pond on their family’s home.

The Des Moines Register reports TJ and Nathan Frey were outside playing Saturday, November 30, 2013 when they wandered onto the icy pond near their family’s home in rural Prescott, in southwest Iowa.

TJ was 11 and Nate was 9 years old.

The boys’ parents called police around 5:30 p.m. after they found the kids’ belongings next to a hole in the ice, but could not find Nate or TJ.  Divers found the boys beneath the ice.

The boys were airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines where they were pronounced dead.

The ice was reportedly about three inches thick near the shore of the pond, and thinner near the center of the pond where divers said they could break the ice with their fists.

Funeral services were planned for December 7, 2013 for both boys.
