Sterling Newman brings home State Championship

The Sterling Newman Comets won the Illinois State Championship after playing for the title against the Staunton Bulldogs.

The Sterling Newman Comets won the 2A Illinois State Championship after playing for the title against the Staunton Bulldogs.

The Newman Catholic Central Varsity Football team took home a state title in division 2A. They played Staunton on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Illinois.

In the first half, Sterling Newman racked up the points ending in the lead with a score of 34-13. In a not as fruitful but successful second half, the Comets scooped up 6 more points for a final score of 40-13.

The Comets finish their season 13-1.

According to the State-Journal Register, the win is Sterling Newman’s fifth state championship in school history.
