A Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

In Knox County Circuit Court on Friday, November 22, 2013 49-year-old Overton Fisher was sentenced to serve 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, convicted of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of reckless discharge of a firearm.

On June 30, 2011 Jamell Ware was shot by Fisher’s gunfire at Kiwanis Park in Galesburg.

Judge Paul Mangieri stated “I commend the State on their perspective – that in the interest of justice, rather than an intentional taking of a life, this was an incident that within a matter of multiple split seconds lives were changed forever, and one life is lost.”

Fisher was reportedly taken into custody on July 7, 2011 after discharging a firearm five times in Kiwanis Park on June 30, 2011, according to the Knox County State’s Attorney.
