Two men, already jailed on unrelated charges, are now accused of killing an 84-year-old man in his Rock Island home.

Police said they were called to investigate a report of a body inside a home April 27, 2013.  They arrived to find the body of Robert Tufts inside the home in the 900 block of Third Avenue.

Nearly seven months later, investigators charged two men in connection with Tufts’ death.

Tracy Eugene Johnson, 45, and TJ Eugene Johnson, 27, were each charged November 18, 2013.  They each face two counts of first-degree murder, plus one count each of home invasion, residential burglary and aggravated battery to a victim over 60 years of age.

Tracy Johnson was already in the Rock Island County Jail awaiting sentencing after he was found guilty November 20 of two counts of burglary, plus he was awaiting trial for a separate burglary charge.  TJ Johnson had been in the Rock Island County Jail since October after he was charged with intimidating a witness, communicating with a witness and misdemeanor battery.

Bond for the charges involving Mr. Tuft’s death was set at $1.5 million for Tracy Johnson and $1 million for TJ Johnson.

Both men remained held in the Rock Island County Jail.
