Clothing and shoes are being collected to benefit school-age-children from several area elementary schools.
Students from 15 Davenport elementary schools and seven Moline elementary schools have been confidentially assessed for clothing that they need. The Mediacom Shoes That Fit campaign accepts donations of shoes and clothes that are specifically matched to meet these children’s needs.
“The program is about more than shoes,” said Jim Stoos, the vice president of Mediacom’s advertising division. “In many classrooms, teachers will see a child with only one set of clothes and a pair of worn out shoes to wear to school every day. This affects a child’s self-esteem, and it means that learning takes a back seat to embarrassment.”
Stoos said that along with contributions from the community, area businesses help make the program possible. Those businesses are Mimzi Art and Frame, Bridgeway Auto Sales, and Deere Harvester Credit Union.
Through December 16, donors can pick up Shoes That Fit donation cards from any of these business sponsors. The cards describe the items that are needed, including the child’s gender and size. Once a donor has purchased a needed item, they can drop it off, unwrapped, to the business sponsor.
A spokesperson from the Shoes That Fit campaign said that only new clothing and shoes will be accepted.
