When the mayoral race of a western Iowa town resulted in a tie the county’s supervisors drew a name from a hat to determine the winner.
According to a report by KSCJ Talk Radio 1360, when residents of Cushing, Iowa cast their votes for mayor on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 the outcome was a tie. Candidates Gary Merkel and Donald Joy Jr. each got 22 votes.
To determine the winner, both mayoral candidates names were placed into a hat and supervisors of Woodbury County drew a name, according to KSCJ.
The Sioux City Journal reported that the incumbent candidate, Gary Merkel won the draw. Merkel has been the mayor of the 220-person town since 1992.
